Google Business Profile Verification: Your Options and What to Expect
Google Business Profile verification, explained: the methods Google offers, what a service area business must show on video, and what to do if it fails.
By Adam Brewer, founder of Local Voice. Figures checked October 14, 2026.
Google Business Profile verification is how Google confirms you run a business before it lets you manage the profile. Google picks the method. It can be a phone call or text, an email, a video recording, a live video call or a postcard. Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days, and on rare occasions longer.
For a service area business, the video rules differ. Google asks to see your tools, a branded vehicle or business documents instead of a storefront. Every step below follows Google's help pages as they read on October 14, 2026.
Every figure was checked at its source on October 14, 2026. Derived figures are marked as Local Voice calculations.
Why does Google Business Profile verification matter?
You can't run the profile without it. Google says you need to verify to edit your business info, such as your name or hours (Google Business Profile Help). Its ranking page says verification tells Google "you're authorized to represent the business, so it's more likely to show up in search results." Its appeals page warns that without it, "content associated with your Business Profile might not appear across Google."
Verification also turns on your call counts. Google says "Performance data is available only for verified Business Profiles," and new photos and posts stay pending until you're verified. Trade listings show up in a lot of searches. In BrightLocal's Google My Business Insights Study, a plumbing and HVAC listing showed up in about 1,069 searches a month, adding BrightLocal's median discovery and direct searches (Figure 1).

The trade totals add BrightLocal's median discovery and direct searches for each category (Local Voice calculation). BrightLocal published the 1,009 for the average business. Its industry table doesn't state a time unit. The study reports its other listing figures per month, so we read these as monthly.

That data is from 2017 and 2018. Treat it as a sense of scale, not a forecast for your profile.
What are the Google Business Profile verification options?
Google chooses, not you. Its help page says, "Verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed." You may see one option or several. Table 1 lists them.
Table 1. Google Business Profile verification methods

If video shows up, take it. Google says, "If your business is eligible for video verification, we recommend that you use this option." Bulk verification is out for service area businesses. It requires 10 or more profiles from the same business, and Google lists "Your business isn't a service-area business" as a requirement (Google Business Profile Help).

How do you verify a Google Business Profile with a video?
Record one live clip on your phone that proves where you're based, that the business exists and that you manage it. Google's video verification page says it works for storefront, service-area and hybrid businesses. What you film depends on which one you are (Figure 3).

Every video has to meet the same basic rules. Google says it must be captured live, because "pre-recorded videos aren't allowed." It must be "an unedited, unique, and complete recording with no breaks," at least 30 seconds long, and recorded and uploaded from a mobile device. Leave out "sensitive info like bank account, tax, or ID numbers" and "other people's faces."

To submit it, open your Business Profile on your phone and tap Get verified. Choose the business video option, then tap Start recording. Stop when you're done, review the clip and tap Upload video. Google says the review "can take up to 5 business days."
Phone, email, live video call and postcard
Phone or text. Google says to "answer the call or open the text with the code," then enter the code on your profile.
Email. Google says to "make sure you can use the email address in the verification screen," then follow the steps in the email.
Live video call. Only available during your location's business hours. Google says to "make sure you're at your business and can show your location and ownership during the call."
Postcard. Confirm your mailing address and request the code. Google says most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30. While you wait, don't edit your business name, address or category, and don't request a new code. Never share the code, "even with those who manage your Business Profile."
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
Up to 5 business days after you finish a method, Google says, though on rare occasions it takes longer. A postcard adds mailing time, since most arrive within 14 days. Some profiles are verified instantly, such as when you verify your website with Google Search Console. When it's done, Google says "you'll get a confirmation email."
Why does verification fail?
Verification fails when something doesn't meet Google's requirements. Google's help pages point to these causes:
The video missed a requirement. Google says a "Review issues" notice means "your video wasn't accepted."
The business isn't eligible. Google says an online-only business is "not eligible for a Business Profile and can't be verified." A virtual office or remote mailbox doesn't qualify either.
Key details changed. Google says "changes to your business info may require re-verification." Adding or editing a category can trigger it.
Google needs more. Google says it "might request more details or ask you to update your info."

What if someone else already verified your profile?
Request ownership. Go to business.google.com/add, find your business, and select Request Access if Google says someone else may manage it (Google Business Profile Help). Google says the current owner "is then notified by email and has 3 days to respond." If they don't, "you may have the option to claim the profile," though Google says that option "isn't always available."
Service area businesses may need a different route. For a service-area business with no physical shop or office, Google's page says to contact Google instead of using the form.
What if Google suspends your profile?
Fix the problem, then appeal once with proof. Google says it "may suspend or disable Business Profiles that don't follow our guidelines" (Google Business Profile Help). Figure 6 shows the appeal steps.

You get one appeal per decision, so prepare first.

Don't start over with a new listing. Google says, "Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business."

Frequently asked questions
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
Google says reviews take up to 5 business days after you complete a method, and on rare occasions longer. Postcards take longer: most arrive within 14 days, and the codes expire after 30. Some profiles are verified instantly, such as when you verify your website with Google Search Console.
Can I choose how to verify my Google Business Profile?
No. Google says verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed. If you see more than one option, you can pick among those. Google recommends video when you're eligible.
How do I verify a Google Business Profile with no storefront?
Record a video at your business address that shows street signs or a landmark, your tools or equipment, and proof you manage the business, such as opening your locked, branded van with your keys. Google also lets you show a permit, invoice or utility bill. It must be one live, unedited take of at least 30 seconds.
Why is Google asking me to verify again?
Google says changes to your business info may require re-verification. Adding or editing a category can trigger it. Avoid changing your name, address or category while a verification is pending.
Can I verify my Google Business Profile without a postcard?
Yes, if Google offers you another method. It may offer a phone call or text, email, a video recording or a live video call. Google decides which methods you see, and it recommends video when you're eligible.
What documents help a Google Business Profile appeal?
Google lists official business registration, a business license, tax certificates and utility bills for the business, such as electricity, phone or internet. Make sure the name and address match your profile. Google says appeals can only be submitted once.

Sources
Verification methods, requirements, wait times and appeal steps come from Google Business Profile Help pages. Search volume comes from BrightLocal's Google My Business Insights Study: 45,264 listings in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Australia, September 2017 to December 2018, reported as medians.
When we checked
Every Google page and every figure was checked at its source on October 14, 2026. Google changes verification options and screens often. If a step has moved, the page linked in Sources has the current version.
Calculations
Figure 1 trade totals = median discovery searches + median direct searches per BrightLocal category. Plumbing and HVAC: 957 + 112 = 1,069. Construction/Roofing: 469 + 67 = 536. Landscaping: 401 + 50 = 451. Tradesmen: 414 + 36 = 450. Locksmiths: 185 + 6 = 191. A sum of two medians is an estimate, not the median of total searches.
Limits
Google doesn't publish how it picks the methods each business sees, so yours may differ from Table 1. Two Google appeal pages list slightly different utility bill examples, so we named only the ones both pages share.
What we left out
Claims about which verification method is fastest or most likely to pass. We found no data from Google on success rates or typical wait times beyond the limits Google states.
